Where did Mercedes' Australia qualifying performance come from?

Seeing Red Bull lead the way with Max Verstappen assuming pole position for the Australian Grand Prix was no suprise. But closely behind him, Mercedes shrugged off their season-opening woes to claim P2 and P3.
