It’s officially down to eight at the US Open, and on the women’s side of the draw, the eight that remain are not the 8 that were projected to be there.
Losses from the two pre-tournament favorites, Ashleigh Barty (+375) and Naomi Osaka (+550) have created a fascinating market for futures, with Aryna Sabalenka the favorite at +275, but no other player longer than 16-1.
The best story thus far, however, has been the two 18 year-olds lighting the tournament on fire. Emma Raducanu, the big-hitting Brit (born in 2002!), has gone from 200-1 pre-tournament to +700 as she continues to throttle the field. In her last two matches, against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Shelby Rogers, Raducanu has dropped only four total games.
Leylah Fernandez entered the tournament as an 18 year-old and 300-1 longshot, but is now 19 and only a 16-1 dog. The Canadian has two monster wins coming at the hands of Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, players who had hopes to win the title in New York.
The Belarusian Sabalenka has been impressive thus far in the tournament, dropping a lone set in the first round and cruising since then. Wimbledon finalist Pliskova trails close behind at +400, as the Czech seeks her first major title.
A group of five between +550 and +900 exists from there, and each have an argument to be made for why they can continue their runs. Bencic does have a gold medal from this summer’s Olympics to her name, and Svitolina earned a bronze medal at the event.
At +800, reigning French Open champion Krejcikova is the only player remaining with a grand slam title to her name..
The first of two quarterfinal matchups take place today as Svitolina faces Fernandez at 1 p.m. ET, and Sabalenka faces Krejcikova at 7 p.m. ET.
