The American Express 2021 Ultimate DFS Lineup: Targeting Lower-Priced Options

The American Express has historically been a tournament for longshots, which presents value in the DFS market on lower-tiered options.

That’s the strategy Jason Sobel and Peter Jennings took on the latest Action Network Podcast.

Each week, the pair drafts their ultimate DFS lineup for the week’s tournament. This week (starting at 32:00), Jennings made the first pick as the two alternate selections.

Jennings went with Erik van Rooyen coming off a missed cut at the Sony Open, citing his great ball-striking stats paired with horrible putting. Those are the types of players the two like to target the following week.

Sobel went with Aaron Wise, a west coast native playing this week’s California tournament. He’s also targeting him in the outright market.

After two lower-priced options, the two get their high-priced anchors starting with Scottie Scheffler.

“Just from a DFS price, I think Scottie Scheffler is way too cheap,” Jennings says. “My only concern is he might be a little too chalky in DFS.”

Jennings believes Scheffler should be priced higher than players like Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff and in the same tier as Patrick Reed and Tony Finau. He then mentions the player he calls “way overpriced.”

When talking about the top of the DFS market, Sobel says he doesn’t “love any of them, don’t hate any of them. The one guy I do think has a high ceiling and low floor is Matthew Wolff.” That makes him a potential GPP target.

With a similar price as Reed, Scheffler and Sungjae Im, Sobel can see Wolff getting a lower ownership percentage.

The lineup is rounded out with a player with “significant value and betting markets” in Sepp Straka as well as one of Sobel’s weekly favorites in Doc Redman.
