Manchester United and Everton will finish off a five-game Premier League slate on Saturday, in what is probably the most intriguing of the five matches — second place vs. seventh place at Old Trafford.
Here’s a closer look at the two clubs, followed by a prediction.
Manchester United
Manchester United went nuts in a 9-0 rout of Southampton on Tuesday, equaling the largest margin of victory in Premier League history. And they spread the wealth, too, with seven different goalscorers — Anthony Martial got a brace (off the bench), plus there were goals from Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay and Daniel James, as well as a Southampton own goal.
Here’s the catch: Southampton was down a man for practically the entire match after Alexandre Jankewitz’s second-minute red card. And the final three goals (including Fernandes’ penalty kick) came after Southampton had a second player — Jan Bednarek — sent off.
Just three days prior, Manchester United played a scoreless draw at Arsenal. Three days before that, they lost 2-1 at home to bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United. Long story short, don’t go too crazy about the massive scoreline.
Everton
Everton are coming off a 2-1 win at Leeds United on Wednesday — a good performance in which they doubled up Leeds in terms of expected goals as well, at 1.8-0.9.
The Toffees suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle last weekend, but posted two good results prior to that — a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, preceded by a 2-1 win over Wolves.
In their past 10 league matches dating back to the beginning of December, Everton have six wins and two draws. Their only other defeat, besides the loss to Newcastle, was a 1-0 loss to West Ham on New Year’s Day.
Betting Analysis & Picks
Manchester United beat Everton, 3-1, at Goodison Park back on Nov. 7, but the expected goals total in that match was just 2.2 in total — 1.6 of that from the winning side.
Throw out the 9-0, and Manchester United’s previous seven league matches have featured three goals or fewer, including two scoreless draws, and two 1-0 wins.
Everton’s past 11 league matches have featured three goals or fewer, with eight of those 11 ending with two or fewer.
You can call me a contrarian if you wish, but I’m going with under 2.5 goals at plus money. And Everton around +500 is simply too good to pass up. These teams are much more evenly matched than that. Manchester United are eight points ahead in the table, but Everton have two games in hand.
