The Spurs failed to make the playoffs for the second straight season after previously possessing one of the longest consecutive postseason streaks in NBA history. Despite falling short of the postseason, San Antonio still showed some impressive growth with a roster that has some great, young talent.

San Antonio has the 12th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and will surely be looking to add some offensive pop to a team that showed the ability to hold up defensively.

Gregg Popovich relied heavily on Dejounte Murray, DeMar DeRozan, and Derrick White this past season. This trio of players provides different skill sets that worked together well — especially with DeRozan playing more of a small-ball power forward role — but none them profile as an even above average 3-point shooter.

The Spurs were dead-last in the league in 3-point attempts and 24th (out of 30 teams) in 3-point percentage. San Antonio’s defense could be the best in the league next season, but it won’t mean much if they don’t improve as a 3-point shooting team.

Getting younger and more athletic is seemingly a year-in, year-out priority for the Spurs but perhaps now more than ever.

NBA Draft Needs

  • High Volume 3-Point shooting: As mentioned above, the Spurs are one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the league. The Spurs don’t turn the ball over, and they take smart shots. Adding a rookie who aggressively hunts the 3-point shot would do wonders for the San Antonio offense.
  • Athletic Rim Protector: The Spurs were 27th in the league in offensive rebound percentage. San Antonio could generate more quality 3-point looks if they could produce more offensive rebounds. On defense, the already solid San Antonio unit would become more dangerous with a rookie who can cover a lot of ground while collecting blocks from the weak side.
