Earlier this morning, I published a post examining how tonight’s Washington vs. Patriots over/under has moved since opening and theorized that status updates for Ryan Fitzpatrick (and eventually Cam Newton and Mac Jones) were responsible for an influx of professional betting action.
Interestingly, the Washington vs. Patriots spread had yet to move on that news as of early Thursday morning.
However, that all changed a few hours later when sharps came back for more, this time keying in on Thursday night’s Washington vs. Patriots NFL preseason Week 1 spread.

As mentioned above, the Washington vs. Patriots spread sat at New England +2 earlier this morning, but has now flipped to Pats -1 (click here for live NFL preseason Week 1 odds) thanks to sharp betting action.
With news of New England’s intention to play both Newton and Jones tonight, or perhaps some other piece of information, an influx of smart money hit the Patriots at around 10:35 a.m. ET Thursday per Action Labs’ Bet Signals data.
With respected bettors jumping on Bill Belichick’s team as an underdog, oddsmakers across the market reacted by pushing the Pats to -1.
The public is also pivoting to New England as we get closer to game time, evidenced by the 61% percent of spread tickets now on the home favorite.
To put this in perspective, that percentage sat at 56% shortly before 10 a.m. ET Thursday.
