Two months after winning the 2020 NBA title, the Los Angeles Lakers are the betting favorites to do it again in 2021.

The Lakers are +275 favorites to repeat as champions with the NBA season set to begin Dec. 22 — those odds give them a 26.7% implied probability to repeat (convert more odds using our Betting Odds Calculator). Los Angeles won’t have to wait to get a glimpse of another contender, as the Lakers meet the Clippers (+550) on opening night.

The Lakers shuffled their roster this offseason, bringing in Marc Gasol, Dennis Schroder, Wesley Matthews and Montrezl Harrell to replace Dwight Howard, Avery Bradley, Danny Green, JaVale McGee and Rajon Rondo. That’s all secondary to bringing back LeBron James and Anthony Davis, of course — those two are enough to hold the top spot on the odds board.

A repeat champion isn’t uncommon in the NBA. The last team to do it was the 2017-18 Warriors, LeBron’s Miami Heat did it in 2012-13 and the Lakers last did it in 2001-02 as part of a three-peat.

The Clippers are once again chasing the Lakers. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George welcome Serge Ibaka, Nicolas Batum and Luke Kennard to a team looking to rebound from last season’s postseason collapse. Doc Rivers was replaced by Ty Lue, but this team will once again go as far as Kawhi and George take it.

Both Los Angeles teams are well ahead of the field in the West: Denver (+2000), Dallas (+2200) and Golden State (+3000) are the next closest contenders.

The Bucks (+550) are on top of the East after adding Jrue Holiday to a new Big Three of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. They’re slightly ahead of the new-look Nets (+600) with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant ready to hit the floor together for the first time.

There’s a sizable gap to the second tier in the East — Miami and Boston are +1500, with the Sixers (+2000) and Raptors (+2500) close behind.
