The San Diego Padres had a disappointing trade deadline, coming away with only Adam Frazier after having their name in the conversation for most of the starting pitching on the market.

Nonetheless, Frazier will provide some solid versatility to a team that has obvious World Series aspirations. San Diego has lost three of its last five games and looks to get back on track in Friday’s showdown.

Arizona, which has been firmly entrenched in last place in the NL West, are playing like that type of team, losing four of its last five games. The Diamondbacks’ last win was a 3-1 victory over the Giants in which Madison Bumgarner pitched 7.0 innings, giving up only one earned run in the process.

Diamondbacks pitcher Caleb Smith obviously doesn’t inspire the type of confidence Bumgarner does on the mound, but luckily for Arizona, neither does young Padres starter Ryan Weathers.

The Padres are likely to struggle to put together any big runs without Fernando Tatis Jr., who currently is on the injured list with an ailing shoulder.  That means their starting pitching has to be lights-out down the stretch.

The 21-year-old Weathers has a 3.65 ERA, but a much less impressive 4.89 ERA at home. There is reason to believe Carson Kelly (.806 OPS), Asdrubal Cabrera (37 RBI) and the others can get after San Diego’s pitching early and often. Let’s take a closer look at in our latest MLB PRO Report.
