The 2021 MLB Home Run Derby is set to take place at 8 p.m. ET this Monday on ESPN Live from Coors Field in Denver. With the field now set, we’re in for what promises to be one of the most exciting events in recent memory.
AL MVP frontrunner Shohei Ohtani comes in as to betting favorite at +400. Ohtani leads the majors with 32 home runs at the time of this writing, four more than second-place Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (who is not in the field).
Ohtani is also the top seed in the bracket-formatted competition. He faces Washington’s Juan Soto in the first round, then would potentially face the winner of a Salvador Perez-Pete Alonso matchup in the semifinals.
The bracket is seeded by the total number of home runs by the eight competitors as of end of play Wednesday.
The second-lowest odds belong to Texas Rangers slugger Joey Gallo at +450. The 27-year-old has 23 home runs this season, which is second-most in the field, and has hit 10 in his past 10 games as of the start of the day Thursday. As a lefty with prodigious power throughout his career, seeing him take aim at the thin air of Coors Field should be a delight.
Gallo faces hometown star Trevor Story in the first round, with a potential semifinal matchup against the winner of Matt Olson vs. Trey Mancini.
The only player with previous Derby experience is Alonso, who comes in with the third-lowest odds at +525. Alonso is actually the defending champion, as the event wasn’t held in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 2019, Alonso bested Guerrero 23-22 in the finals at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
