With the NFL, NBA, college basketball, NHL, golf, soccer and MMA all in season, there’s few more exciting times on the sports calendar than right now. And that makes the impending launch of online sports betting in Michigan even more exciting.

Sports betting was first allowed in Michigan right before March Madness last year in 2020, although there was an important caveat: Bettors had to register in person at a casino, which obviously wasn’t possible once the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in full shortly thereafter.

It prompted Michigan legislators, however, to pursue fully online betting in the state, much like we see with New Jersey, Indiana and several other states with legal betting. Thus, on Friday Michiganians will be able to legally register, deposit and bet all from the comfort of their own homes — or anywhere with internet access.

When Will Online Sports Betting Be Live in Michigan?

Online sports betting is expected to go live in Michigan this Friday, as reported by our own Ryan Butler.

Tennessee, the most recent state to add legal online betting, launched with just four sportsbooks (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Action 24/7), and even a month later it’s still just that quartet. Michigan, however, has superior regulations, which will make it an enticing state for sportsbooks.

A total of 15 sportsbooks have been approved for sports betting in Michigan already, nine of which will be able to take bets this Friday.

It’s good timing for Michigan, which will be live in time for the NFL Playoffs this weekend — and most importantly before the Super Bowl in February and March Madness a month later.

When Will DraftKings Launch in Michigan?

DraftKings is already one of the biggest sportsbooks in the United States, if not already the biggest by market share. Originally a daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator founded in 2012, it quickly jumped into sports betting after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down PASPA in 2018, allowing states to legalize online sports betting.

Since then, it’s launched into nearly every state where online betting is allowed and currently operates in nine: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, West Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee and New Hampshire. It also operates retail sportsbooks in a few states, including Mississippi and New York.

It’s been one of the few books to launch from Day 1 in newly legalized states, and that will be the case Friday in Michigan, where it’s already been approved. It’ll also likely launch in Virginia later this month and should continue to expand in 2021 as more states come online.
