The Larry O’Brien trophy will go to the last team standing, but this NBA postseason has taken that saying almost too literal.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is the latest star player to suffer an injury in the playoffs, and as a result the Bucks are no longer the betting favorite to win the championship this year.
Entering Tuesday’s game between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks, the Bucks were the -115 favorite to win it all. After Giannis went down with what the team is calling a hyperextended knee, Milwaukee dropped to +325 at BetMGM.
The Phoenix Suns, with a 3-2 lead over the Clippers in the Western Conference Finals, are the new betting favorite at -130.
The Suns are the only team left not dealing with a significant injury.
The Hawks (+550) played Game 4 without Trae Young due to a foot injury suffered in Game 3 when he stepped on an official’s foot. The Clippers are without Kawhi Leonard due to a knee injury. Devin Booker is playing with a facemask due to a broken nose, but at least the Suns have him on the floor.
Atlanta’s odds have seen the biggest adjustment. The Hawks were left for dead without Young, falling all the way to +4000 to win the title. Now, with the series tied 2-2 and Young’s injury status more optimistic than what’s being assumed about Antetokounmpo, Atlanta is ahead of the Clippers who sit at +650 as the longest shot on the board.
The Suns and Clippers play Game 6 in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Clippers are 1-point favorites (-115) at time of publish (real-time odds here).
