No pitcher monologues this week. Time for waiver adds and injury news.

Waiver Wire/Streamers

Cole Irvin – Oakland Athletics

Yahoo: 51%, ESPN: 53%

The low strikeout rate and sub-.500 win-loss record does not stick out for many fantasy players, but Irvin has maintained a sub-3.70 ERA and 1.30 WHIP despite his limitations. He earned a tough win against the White Sox on the road August 19 and has logged quality starts in three of his last four starts. As of Sunday morning, he is lined up to face the Seattle Mariners in Oakland on Tuesday.

Chris Flexen – Seattle Mariners

Yahoo: 47%, ESPN: 56%

Don’t want to trust Irvin? Take his opponent Tuesday. Flexen has been an excellent home pitcher for Seattle but has taken his winning ways to the road of late. He has quality starts in three of his last four road starts, including three earned runs in five innings in the Bronx. For as good as Flexen has been in 2021, his recent stretch may be his best of the season.

Austin Gomber – Colorado Rockies

Yahoo: 39%, ESPN: 40%

Gomber has been mediocre at best against teams he should do well against (Arizona Diamondbacks most recently). His lone start this week is in Chicago against the Cubs. Since August 1, the Cubs have a 60 home Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) against southpaws. That is tied for 28th in baseball over that time. The offense has also racked up a 37.2% strikeout rate over that sample, the worst in baseball by 7.2%.

Tarik Skubal – Detroit Tigers

Yahoo: 44%, ESPN: 38%

Skubal had a two-game win streak snapped August 18 despite going seven-plus innings and allowing two earned runs. He has three straight quality starts and has allowed two runs in 18 2/3 innings in those starts. He should fare well against the Cardinals’ mediocre offense this week.

Logan Gilbert – Seattle Mariners

Yahoo: 43%, ESPN: 43%

The rookie has been hit hard his last two starts, allowing 14 earned runs over 9 2/3 innings pitched, but I don’t care with the Royals coming to Seattle next week. Kansas City has a 79 road wRC+ and .653 OPS against right-handed pitching.

Injuries

Ian Anderson (shoulder) will make one more rehab start before rejoining the Atlanta rotation.

Kenta Maeda will undergo an MRI on his forearm after exiting his start against the New York Yankees.

Chris Archer is scheduled to come off the 60-day IL August 22 and start against the White Sox. It would be his first start in four months.

After one start with the Padres, Jake Arrieta landed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain.

Jacob deGrom was transferred to the 60-day IL. The earliest he can come off the IL is September 15.

Freddy Peralta is expected to make his next scheduled start after exiting his last start against the Cardinals with shoulder discomfort.
