Drew Brees announced what has been reported for some time. He’s officially retiring.
Brees’ final game was a 30-20 loss to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the playoffs, putting the cap on what’s been a profitable career.
FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported before that game that it would be the last for Brees in the Superdome, the home of the New Orleans Saints.
New Orleans didn’t cover as a 3-point favorite that final night, but betting on Brees has been profitable throughout his career. He finished his career 162-135-7 against the spread (ATS) overall and 181-123 straight up.
The decline for Brees’s arm talent has been visible for years, but his production was still there. Brees hasn’t averaged 300 yards per game since 2016, but he still completed at least 70% of his passes in each of the last four years.
His stack of accolades is high. He’s a 13-time Pro Bowler who led the league in passing yards seven different times. He led the NFL in passing touchdowns four different times. His Saints won the 2009 Super Bowl, and he was the MVP of the game.
Surprisingly, he never won a regular-season MVP award.
The knock on Brees will be recent playoff memories. The Saints have had premature exits from the postseason in each of the last four years — at least by their expectations. In his career, Brees is 7-11 ATS in the postseason.
His career ended two days after his 42nd birthday with three interceptions and one touchdown on 19-of-34 passing for 134 yards. It was his first game with three picks since 2016.
