Here’s what initially sticks out.
Ohio State Laying Double Digits In Prime-Time Clash
Fox Big Noon Kickoff heads to Columbus for Saturday’s Oregon-Ohio State tilt. The Buckeyes opened 14-point favorites, with a total of 63.5.
Third-year Ohio State head coach Ryan Day still hasn’t lost during the regular season over his tenure. The Buckeyes have also won 24 of the last 25 games straight up at The Shoe.
However, they’ve struggled in the favorite role at home lately, winning just one of the last six against the spread.
Fade UConn?
The UConn bandwagon should be relatively quiet this week, if not completely empty.
The Huskies — who didn’t participate last season — followed up a 45-0 whupping at the hands of Fresno State in Week 0 with a 10-point loss to Holy Cross this past weekend.
Naturally, the Huskies are in the underdog role against Purdue next Saturday, getting 33.5. It’ll be the 15th straight game the program’s catching points of the double-digit variety.
As if that wasn’t sad in its own right, head coach Randy Edsall pulled the plug Sunday, announcing he’d retire at the conclusion of the season.
Feel free to fade him and the Huskies as long as the opportunities are there: Edsall is 12-24-1 against the spread at the post, which ranks 299th out of 301 coaches.
NC State Flips From ‘Dog to Chalk
It’s still early, but the market pounded North Carolina State. The Wolfpack opened as small underdogs (+1), before flipping to favorites for their clash against Mississippi State.
NC State was perhaps a sleeping giant last season, going 8-4 with three losses against AP Top 25 teams and an additional two-point defeat to Kentucky in the bowl game. The program had no trouble in its opener, thrashing South Florida 45-0.
Mississippi State, meanwhile, needed a late, 20-point comeback over Louisiana Tech to avoid losing outright as three-touchdown favorites.
Since upsetting LSU in last year’s season opener, Bulldogs head coach Mike Leach is just 3-7 against the number.
