Patrick Mahomes will look to lead his team to their second straight Super Bowl victory against the last quarterback to successfully do it: Tom Brady.
Brady and the Patriots made two championship runs in 2004 and 2005, becoming the eighth team to win back-to-back titles in Super Bowl history. Who were the others? And what about the teams that have made consecutive trips, but didn’t win two in a row (or any at all)?
We’ve outlined a very basic but comprehensive history of back-to-back Super Bowl teams below.
Note: All years listed are the calendar years each Super Bowl was won in, so the Chiefs won it in 2020, even though it capped the 2019 season.
Back-to-Back Super Bowl Winners
Eight teams have won in back-to-back seasons. But those eight represent only half of the teams to make consecutive trips to the Super Bowl: There are nine that have done it, but only won one (or none).
Before we dig into the full list of 18 teams (including the Chiefs), here are some key highlights:
- The team to make the most consecutive Super Bowl trips? The Bills from 1991 to 1994. The team to make the most consecutive Super Bowl trips without a win? The Bills from 1991 to 1994.
- Other than the Bills, the only other team to make more than two straight Super Bowl appearances? The Patriots, from 2017 to 2019, although they won “only” the first and third of those trips and thus are not among the back-to-back winners.
- If the Chiefs lose to the Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55, they would be the fifth team of 18 total to win their first appearance but lose their second.
