2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds: Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy Among the Favorites at TPC Scottsdale

After a wild tournament at Torrey Pines the PGA TOUR heads to TPC Scottsdale for the 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

While a few big names, such as Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed, won’t make the trip to Arizona, we’ve got a world-class field ready to tee it up at “The People’s Open” with five of the top-10 players in the world and 21 of the top-50 are set to participate.

Just like at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, Jon Rahm is the betting favorite at this year’s WMPO. Rahm, who opened at +600 ($10 bet wins $60), is coming off a T7 at Torrey Pines, though he would probably be a bit disappointed with how he played on the weekend. The World No. 2 shot even par on Saturday and Sunday, losing any chance he had of putting some pressure on Reed at the top of the leaderboard. Even so, the former Arizona State Sun Devil looks in great form as he’s now finished inside the top-10 (including three straight T7’s) in his last four events and has finished outside the top-20 just once in his last 10 starts.

Rahm is one of three golfers listed in the single-digits this week, along with Justin Thomas (+750), who is coming off a missed cut at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship two weeks ago, and Xander Schauffele (+800), who just finished T2 at Torrey Pines.

Rory McIlroy is next at +1100. Like Rahm, Rory sputtered out over the weekend at Torrey Pines and finished T16, but the Northern Irishman seems to have put things together over the brief offseason. McIlroy finished third in Dubai in his first 2021 start and then was able to shake off the jet lag to hang around the leaderboard at the Farmers, where he ranked eighth in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green.

Defending champion Webb Simpson rounds out the top-five at +1400. Webb most recently posted a T4 at the Sony Open, but he’s also in the middle of a purple patch of form with 10 top-20 finishes in his last 12 tournaments.

Daniel Berger (+1600), Hideki Matsuyama (+2200) and Harris English (+2500) are the only other golfers currently priced shorter than +3000.

As is quite often the case at tournaments like this, the middle of the betting board provides plenty of intrigue. There are 13 players listed between +3300 and +6600 and you could make a decent argument for each of them.

This will be Sungjae Im‘s fifth tournament of 2021 as the 22-year-old South Korean continues to live up to his reputation as the TOUR’s iron man. Im, who is +3300 to win the WMPO, has traded a couple of impressive results with some pedestrian ones so far this year but he hasn’t missed a cut since the RSM Classic in November.

Although he never really popped on the leaderboard, Will Zalatoris continued his impressive ascendance with a T7 at Torrey Pines. Per Justin Ray, it was Zalatoris’ 14th top-10 finish worldwide since the beginning of 2020, giving him the most of any player in that span. It seems like a matter of time before Zalatoris ends up in the winner’s circle and he’s +4500 to get there this week, putting him ahead of some big names:

  • Brooks Koepka +5000
  • Rickie Fowler +5000
  • Bubba Watson +5000
  • Matthew Wolff +5000
  • Gary Woodland +6600
  • Jason Day +8000

Zalatoris isn’t the only recent Korn Ferry standout who could get some betting support this week as Davis Riley will also be in the field. Riley, who is a big longshot at +50000, will definitely have some support at those long odds but he also figures to be a chalky DFS play near the bottom of the board.

Another longshot that will likely get some hype is Henrik Norlander at +10000. Not only did the Swede finish T2 at Torrey Pines, but he was T12 at The Sony Open the week before.

Like Norlander, Sam Burns (+8000) could be a trendy punt at TPC Scottsdale. Burns is always a popular play when his price is long, so don’t be surprised to hear his name a bit after his top-20 performance at Torrey Pines.
