Inherent in preseason matchups is uncertainty, which means that betting them comes with a higher degree of built-in risk.

In interconference games, specifically, the familiarity between teams is minimized as they usually only face off once every four years or so. This particular uncertainty makes it difficult for the market to handicap the game, and most edges are overrated. Not surprisingly, this has led to a situation in which it’s been profitable to bet on underdogs, who have collectively gone 458-321-3 (.523) against the spread (ATS) in interconference preseason games since 2004 according to our Action Labs data.

If you’re looking for action on Friday night’s trio of games, the Bills (+1) and Titans (+1) are — on paper — fits for a profitable preseason betting trend we track that targets interconference underdogs specifically of a field goal or less.

Past contests that were a match for this trend have proven to be toss-ups, producing a 54.6% cover rate and 6.9% return on investment for underdogs.

Of course, you should still consider other factors such as the fact that Josh Allen won’t play for Buffalo, so make sure to consider the bigger picture.
