As we enter the month of March on the sports calendar, most people turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament for a wild four weeks of college hoops. Around the NBA, fans of terrible teams are also watching, specifically to see if a standout player will save their team from the basement of the league.
This season, that potential savior is Cade Cunningham.
The 6-foot-8 freshman has wowed the college basketball world all season and is averaging 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game on 45% shooting from the field and 41% from behind the arc for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He’s the odds on favorite (-250 odds at PointsBet) to be taken with the No. 1 overall picks in the upcoming NBA draft.
His main competition for the top pick in this year’s draft isn’t a fellow collegiate player, though. Jonathan Kuminga, a 6-foot-6 forward who plays for the NBA’s G-League Ignite team is next on the odds board at +400 to go No. 1, followed by his teammate Jalen Green who is +500. USC freshman forward Evan Mobley (+500) and Gonzaga guard Jalen Suggs (+900) round out the top-five names on the board.
As of Tuesday, the Minnesota Timberwolves (7-28), Detroit Pistons (9-25) and Houston Rockets (11-22) each have a 14% chance to land the No. 1 pick in the draft. The Orlando Magic (13-22) are next at 12.5% and the Sacramento Kings (13-21) have the fifth-best chance at 10.5%.
