The MLB All-Star Game has turned into an American League showcase over the last two decades, but bettors are backing the National League in 2021.
The trends favor the American League in terms of history. They’ve won 19 of the last 23 games, including seven in a row. Still, the NL has taken more bets and money than the AL at both PointsBet and BetMGM.
According to data released by the sportsbooks on Tuesday, the NL has taken 61% of the money at BetMGM and 58% at PointsBet. It’s notable at PointsBet that the numbers are flipped for bet count — 58% of bets are on the American League — which suggests the bigger money is coming in on the NL.
The AL has been hit by replacements but still boast a lineup with Shohei Ohtani, Vlad Guerrero Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Aaron Judge hitting in the first four spots against NL starter Max Scherzer. Scherzer is getting the nod despite being a replacement player after teams were originally announced.
Ohtani takes the mound one night after a drawn-out first-round matchup against Juan Soto in the Home Run Derby. He’ll be tasked with Fernando Tatis Jr., Max Muncy and Nolan Arenado in the first inning. Ohtani will remain in the game as the designated hitter once he exits his pitching appearance.
The total is seeing plenty of action, also in the direction that bucks recent trends. At PointsBet, 74% of dollars bet on the total are on over 11 runs (-115) despite the under hitting in 12 of the last 16 games. Those weren’t played at Coors Field, of course.
