2021 Memorial Tournament Betting Market Report: Is This The Week For Tony Finau?

In a field stacked with some of the best players in the world, is the Memorial the place Tony Finau breaks through?

Bettors must think so.

No golfer has taken more bets or money to win at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village than Finau, according to data released by PointsBet. He’s popular at BetMGM, too, ranking in the top five in handle as well.

It’s well documented at this point that Finau’s only win on the PGA TOUR is at Puerto Rico in a watered-down field. While consistently finding himself at the top of leaderboards on weekends, Finau has not been able to close out a win since that tournament in 2016.

At +2800, over 10% of money wagered at PointsBet is on him to get it done this week.

If he is to win, he’ll have to beat a field that includes Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa, among others.

Fresh off a second-place finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Spieth is the most popular bet at BetMGM. That’s a spot he’s been in frequently in 2021 as he’s re-emerged as one of the best players in the world.

Spieth is no surprise as a popular play; neither are others considered liabilities at the two books such as Thomas, Morikawa and Viktor Hovland. One name somewhat surprising is Charley Hoffman, who is third in bets at PointsBet. Hoffman is riding great form with five consecutive top-20 finishes.

Patrick Cantlay has struggled in recent weeks having missed four cuts in a row prior to the PGA Championship, where he finished T-23. He showed enough there for bettors to buy in at 20-1 odds, ranking fourth in handle at PointsBet.

Morikawa and DeChambeau follow Spieth as the second- and third-most popular bets at BetMGM.

After Finau, PointsBet will be sweating long shot Troy Merritt (+15000) and Patrick Reed as top-three liabilities this week.
