Kentucky Derby entrant Essential Quality has been tabbed as the morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Oddsmakers made Essential Quality, who finished fourth as the Derby favorite May 1, opened at 2-1 odds in third leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. Trained by Brad Cox, Essential Quality headlines a field of eight entrants that will go 1 1/2 miles at Belmont Park.

Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer was made the second betting choice, sitting at 3-1 odds for trainer Michael McCarthy. Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie (third in the Kentucky Derby) is next at 7-2 odds, followed by Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World (9-2) and Florida Derby winner Known Agenda (6-1) to round out the top-five betting choices.

Big news from the New York Racing Association came out following the Preakness, with the organization banning Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert from entering horses at any of the state’s race tracks.

This ban will remain in effect until the investigation into Medina Spirit’s failed drug test following his Kentucky Derby victory is completed. Baffert is not allowed to stable any horses at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, as well as other NYRA-sanctioned tracks.

“In order to maintain a successful thoroughbred racing industry in New York, NYRA must protect the integrity of the sport for our fans, the betting public and racing participants,” NYRA president and CEO Dave O’Rourke said at the time the ban was announced. “That responsibility demands the action taken today in the best interests of thoroughbred racing.”
