Former Minnesota guard Marcus Carr — the best remaining player in the transfer portal — has announced Saturday that he will be joining the Texas Longhorns.

It’s a massive pickup for first-year head coach Chris Beard.

Carr averaged 19.4 points, 4.9 assists and 4.0 rebounds over 35.8 minutes per game for the Golden Gophers last season and was named a member of the third-team All-Big Ten team.

The 22-year-old is a proven scorer who dropped at least 25 points seven times last season, including a high of 41 points in a game at Nebraska.

For now, Texas’ odds to win March Madness in 2022 remain unchanged at PointsBet. They are still the 11th-best favorites to win it all at +1800.

Earlier this month, Texas’ line shortened from +2000 to its current value at +1800. Afterward, PointsBet spokesperson Patrick Eichner indicated that their line could move even further.

“Tons of new faces — [Texas’ futures odds] could move shorter, but we’re comfortable staying a bit above market for now,” Eichner told The Action Network on July 2.

Carr joins five other sought-after transfers who have joined Texas since Beard took over in April. Point guard Devin Askew from Kentucky, forward Christian Bishop from Creighton, forward Timmy Allen from Utah, forward Dylan Disu from Vanderbilt and center Tre Mitchell from the University of Massachusetts have all transferred to Austin for the 2021-22 season.

Carr had bypassed a professional opportunity in Australia in order to transfer to Texas. It had been reported earlier this month that he was choosing between Texas, Louisville, Kentucky and Kansas.
