Jeff Hicks: In starts made by Rockies starter German Marquez and Athletics starter James Kaprielian, a run was scored in the first inning in five of 16 games (31%). One of those games was Marquez’s worst start of the season one month ago when he allowed eight earned runs in 2/3 of an inning pitched. Since then, Marquez has allowed eight total runs in 32 innings pitched.
Kaprielian has been excellent in short work for Oakland and allowed a first inning run once on May 12 in a start in Boston.
This is living dangerously since the game is in Colorado, but plus money to survive one inning with solid pitchers on both teams is a solid risk.

Matt Trebby: Coming into the season, it sounded like the American League East was the New York Yankees’ to lose. We’re not more than two months into the season, and it’s pretty clear that the Bronx Bombers are the fourth-best team in the division.
The AL East features two teams, one of which is going for a sweep at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.
The only thing the Yankees have going for them in this matchup is the superior starting pitcher. Domingo Germán has a 3.27 ERA and 4.03 xFIP and has been a bright spot for the Yankees this season. Corey Kluber was thriving in New York’s rotation, and Gerrit Cole is a bonafide ace.
Pitching is not the problem. The Yankees’ lineup is.
While New York ranks 22nd in OPS (shocking for the Yankees), the Red Sox rank third and have a capable starter on the mound in Garrett Richards. Richards has a 3.75 ERA and 4.52 xFIP, but there’s room for improvement thanks to a bloated .318 BABIP against and 4.50 walks per nine innings. Richards has still provided the Red Sox 60 innings through 11 starts, which is great considering the low expectations for him entering the season.
Right now, the market has the Yankees at -150 simply because they’re the Yankees and people like betting on them. Getting the Red Sox at +130 is crazy here. Maybe Germán ground-balls Boston to death and the Yanks salvage the finale, but the Red Sox lineup is tough to stop. I’ll take it at plus money to seal a sweep.
