Jon Rahm has been the betting favorite every tournament he’s played since the PGA Championship in May, but at this week’s Fortinet Championship he’s reached Tiger Woods level of odds.
At DraftKings, Rahm opened at +300 to win this week in a field that includes Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Kevin Na and Will Zalatoris. While other top players prepare for the Ryder Cup or rest after the FedExCup Playoffs, Rahm will play close to home in Scottsdale, Az., at the tournament formerly known as the Safeway Open.
The +300 odds are so rare in full PGA TOUR fields that we haven’t seen it since Tiger Woods was in his prime.
According to Westgate SuperBook sportsbook VP of Risk Management Jeff Sherman, who archives his betting odds at his website GolfOdds.com, it hasn’t been since 2013 we’ve seen a number this low. Woods was +275 to win the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational. It wasn’t low enough, with Woods going on to win the tournament anyway.
Woods was that low multiple times in his career, including +275 at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2011. It should be noted Phil Mickelson won in his PGA TOUR Champions debut this year as the +200 favorite.
For comparison, Rahm was +600 to win the BMW Championship, which was a limited field although the top players in the world were included. He was +900 at The Open Championship and +800 at the Byron Nelson.
Sherman hasn’t opened Rahm quite as low as DraftKings and others in the market, but he’s still +400 at Westgate. Sherman’s also posting Rahm vs. the Field, which you can take at -500 odds.
“We tend to see larger wagers on short favorites like this, so people don’t shy away from low odds,” Sherman said.
Next after Rahm is Simpson at +1400, with Na third on the board at +1600 odds. Matsuyama and Zalatoris are currently at +2200. Cameron Tringale rounds out the golfers under +3000 right on the number.
